You want to turn right. What should you do?

When turning right in Germany, you must not endanger or obstruct cyclists who are going straight alongside you. A cyclist can be in your blind spot and will often continue straight through the junction faster than you expect. That’s why answer 1 is correct: you let the cyclist pass first instead of cutting across their path.

Answer 2 is also correct because mirrors alone are not enough before a right turn. The shoulder check is the rule of thumb for anything that can be next to you (especially cyclists), so you confirm the area to your right is clear immediately before you turn.

Taking the turn ahead of the cyclist would be wrong because it creates the classic “right-hook” collision risk: you cross the cyclist’s line of travel while they have priority to continue straight.
