You are involved in an accident. What document must you present to the other person involved in the accident, if requested?

In Germany, after an accident you must be able to identify yourself and your vehicle to the other involved person if they ask. That’s why you have to show your driving licence and the vehicle document (registration certificate Part I, formerly “Fahrzeugschein”, or an operating permit if the vehicle doesn’t have normal registration papers). These documents prove that you are allowed to drive and which vehicle is involved, including key data like the license plate and vehicle owner/holder.

You do not have to present your liability insurance contract. The compulsory insurance exists, but you normally don’t carry the contract in the car and it’s not required for the accident exchange. If the other person needs insurance details, they can be obtained later using the license plate and vehicle information or via the police/insurer. The practical rule of thumb: after an accident, exchange identity/driver details and vehicle registration details; insurance paperwork is not something you must show on the spot.
